Macrocystis by Starlitdragon Macrocystis by Starlitdragon
The gold kelp dragons dwelt in the murky freshwater lakes in the east. They preferred the cold water and rarely adopted human form. When the ashblack dragons sought to unite the clans in the east, the golden lakedragons sank into the water and into a wet oblivion. Their natural ability to shift from scales to skin was gradually lost over time. The lakedragons had lost their way and became no more than beasts in the cold water.

Yet one lakedragon had not completely forgotten his sense of self. Demetrius still dreamed of the world above the slumbering sea. He would rise dangerously close to the surface, seeking the fat fish which fed on the rays of the forbidden sun. It was on one such hunt he finally surfaced, and became the first lakedragon to breach the water walls in decades. As Demetrius frolicked, others soon became aware through the native cranes that still fed at the great lakes that the lakedragons were making a return to the waking world.

The ashblack dragons, ever the conquerors, sent a small squadron to convince the lakedragons to join their cause. Cleofont, a whitewater dragon of shell and ice, was the group leader. Cleofont found Demetrius and reminded him how to take his second form.  Cleofont proposed an alliance with his people: in exchange, they would teach the lakedragons how to reclaim their second forms.  All of the lakedragons refused, save for Demetrius.  His abnormality saved his people: Sinon had directed that if a single lakedragon accepted their terms, the species would be spared. Demetrius would be taught and sent back to his people to sow quiet seeds for the Eastern Empire. It was a preferable method of conversion to mass-genocide.

The ashblacks believed they had a divine duty to gather the bimorphic races of Elera Velon, to fight a force that would one day wake and turn every bimorphic being into a dumb beast, frozen in a single form.  The mysterious power that allows dragons, cranes, Lynarian, and witches alike to shift forms was a substance that could be separated and consumed from the flesh body. The ashblacks knew not how long it would take for the force to wake, but they knew their purpose was to oppose it.

0.3 Mechanical pencil, Photoshop CS5.

I've been a little obsessed with species of giant kelp lately, which is where I derived the title of this image. When I create my eastern-style dragons, I like to think of the environments they come from and what native aquatic flora/fauna would be suitable to incorporate. That is why so many of them have little fish and bits of coral or seaweed sticking out of them.

It's a beautiful dragon design, the gold character and dull blue background are a really good combination. Your stories are so interesting!

So you first drew this in mechanical pencil, then scanned/colored/etc it?

Definitely interested! (many thanks for your tumblr link!)
I'm a big fan of mechanical pencil myself, I just am not the best at rendering something in pencil on Photoshop. (and haven't had a scanner for a bit, but I should be getting my scanner back soon!) Lovely seeing the sketch version of this!
